Welcome to the memorial page for

Norma Jeanne (Bell) Marcotte

December 18, 1930 ~ August 10, 2017 (age 86) 86 Years Old

Norma Marcotte of Asheville, North Carolina passed from this earth on August 10, 2017.  She was born on December 18, 1930 in Sturgis, South Dakota to Florence and Ivan Bell.

Norma was formidable, determined with a soft spot for the underdog.  She was a fanatical sports fan who rooted for Notre Dame and the UNC Tarheels.  She loved to play bridge and was very close to her bridge club members.  She loved to travel and proudly visited all 50 states and numerous countries.

She was proud of her heritage and was a member of the Black Hills Pioneers and the Clan Murray.  She was also a devout catholic and a member of St. Eugene’s and St. Barnabas parishes.

She was a nurse until the end.  She received her BSN from the University of Colorado and worked in Augusta, Georgia, Wilmington, Delaware and Oteen, North Carolina.  She led a six southern state polio task force in the 1950’s and once hand pumped an iron lung from Spartanburg to Augusta to keep a patient alive.  She was an advocate for equal rights and fought for the rights of all of her nurses in the segregated south.

She was predeceased by her husband, Kay Marcotte.  Norma loved her son, Ivan Marcotte and his wife Donna of Mill Spring, North Carolina.  She cherished her three grandchildren Anson Marcotte of Arlington, Virginia; Mitchell Marcotte, who predeceased her; and Bennett Marcotte of Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

A celebration of her life will be held at the skilled nursing chapel of Deerfield Retirement Community at 1:00 on August 25, 2017.

The family asks that gifts in her honor be sent to the charity of your choice.
