Luther Rice Mills

Dr. Luther Rice Mills IV, beloved husband and friend died on May 1, 2017 in Hospice at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community in Asheville, NC.  Born April 10, 1937 in Rocky Mount, NC he grew up in Georgia attending public schools in Camilla, Atlanta, Albany, and Tifton.  He graduated from Tifton High School in 1955 and Mercer University, Macon, GA 1955-61 majoring in History, Pre-Law, and Pre-Med.  He received his medical degree in 1966 from the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, GA where he completed a residency in Pathology.  He was awarded sabbaticals for further research study at both Dartmouth Medical School, Hanover, NH and Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead, London, England.  He married Nancy Thompson Mills in 1980, a painter and later an Episcopal Priest.  He was Chief of Surgical Pathology at VAMC, Augusta, GA and Faculty Professor at the MCG Dept. of Pathology where he was awarded Professor Emeritus on retirement in 1997. He then practiced with a private Pathology group in Thomasville, GA. moving to the Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community in 2012.  His parents were Luther Rice Mills III, deceased and Elizabeth Craighill Mills, deceased. A brother Francis Craighill Mills is also deceased.  He is survived by a sister, Mary Mills Thomoson and his wife the Rev. Nancy Thompson Mills.  Memorial Eucharist will be held at St. Giles Chapel on Saturday, May 6 at 11:00 AM.  Memorial gifts may be made to the Asheville Humane Society and the St. Giles Chapel at Deerfield in Asheville.
