Joel Dean Stirewalt, 55, of Hickory passed away suddenly on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at Carolinas Healthcare System Blue Ridge in Morganton. Born on September 20, 1961 in High Point, he was a son of Martha Jackson Stirewalt of High Point and the late Jack Truedall Stirewalt. Joel was an alumnus of Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA where he received his B.A. degree. He proudly served in the U.S. M.C., and was an employee of the Cancer Center at Carolinas Healthcare System Blue Ridge in Valdese. Proudly he served as a past Commander of the Awana Club, and was a member of Biltmore Church in Asheville. Known to be a “Jack of all trades” he knew much about many different trades, however, woodworking was among his favorites. Joel had many passions in life, but nothing reigned more supreme than his devotion to his Lord, his love of his family, and his adventures in the great outdoors. Surviving are his devoted spouse, Leah Slack Stirewalt; children, Amy Byrd and her spouse, Wesley, of Knoxville, TN, Justin Stirewalt and his spouse, Virginia, of Waldorf, MD, Caleb Stirewalt of Tulsa, OK, Anna Combs of Charlotte, NC, Aaron Stirewalt of Tulsa, OK, Josiah, Katerina, Benjamin, and Austyn Stirewalt all of Hickory, NC; siblings, Donna Dills and her spouse, Johnny, of Huntersville, NC, and Gary Stirewalt of Greenboro, NC; grandchildren, Noelle and Micah Bryd; niece, Hannah Dills of Atlanta, GA, and nephew, Joshua Dills of Raleigh, NC. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at Biltmore Church with the family receiving friends from 9:15 to 10:15 AM. Interment will be held at 3:30 PM at Floral Garden Memorial Park in High Point, NC.
