I've just learned of Charles' passing.  In my early years as a state environmental atty. (late '80s, early '90s), I handled dozens of sedimentation, mining & dam safety cases while Charles was first head of the sedimentation program, then head of Land Quality, which included all three.  A lawyer couldn't have asked for a better client; what a human being!

I feel very fortunate to have met and worked with Charles - he was a wonderful scientist, committed public servant, and a kind and generous man to his community and the great state of North Carolina.  Charles had an amazingly positive impact on so many in his life.  May his incredible energy be carried on in others. Charles was truly inspirational, and I'll miss his presence in this world.

Charles was always an attentive face at our monthly bee meetings. He always sought out answers to deeply intelligent bee questions and was helpful at our conferences. So this day, we tell the bees of the passing of this great man, who had so many interests that he is a role model to all to pursue life to the fullest.

I had the pleasure of knowing Charles as a fellow volunteer mediator at The Mediation Center for the past ten years.  He was one of the most skilled, kind, and compassionate mediators I have ever met.  A keen listener, with an open heart and mind always, Charles truly cared about his clients issues, and consistently brought peace into the room with him.  He was such a gentle and grounded presence, and his genuine interest in and curiosity for life and those around him shone. He was most gifted at nurturing and mentoring our "newer" volunteers, and made all of us better through his efforts.  Thank you Charles, I will miss your wisdom and empathy.

He set the standard in professionalism in the engineering community. My sympathy and prayers go with you all.

Chuck, Heath, and family,

I am so saddened by your loss, and ours too.  Charles was one of the kindest, sweetest men I have ever met.  It was so obvious how proud he was of you guys.  I will truly miss him as a neighbor.

I am sorry for your loss and our loss at SVFM.  I do not attend regularly, but when I did I always looked for Charles - he always had a smile and we would usually talk briefly about our love of animals and nature.  He was a kind and gentle soul, the sort of person this world so needs now. He will be greatly missed. Peace to you and your family, Margaret Jones Blk Mtn. NC.

I was so saddened to hear of Charles''s death. I live accross the street from his home, and was so often greeted by his warm smile and wave when I drove by. He seemed to love being outside, attending to his bees, his garden and his lawn.  Under the Blue Ridge has lost a wonderful neighbor. He was  always willing to help anyone when he saw the need. He was a tremendous help and source of knowledge when any problems developed in the neighboorhood. We are all the better for having known him. He will be deeply missed. My sympathies to all who knew and loved him.

I knew Charles from the Barnes and Nobel Wednesday writing group.  He encouraged my writing and I was grateful for his sensitive intelligence and ability to critique without wounding.  I've been missing him for a while.  He often sat at the other side of the table in the back.  That's where I've looked for him.  I'll miss him.  I'm sorry not to have his wonderful personality around anymore.  My condolences to his family and friends.

Charles was a wonderful, kind, and inspirational person. His presence will surely leave a vacuum that can't be filled by others. He will be missed so much. We are fortune to have had him as our neighbor.

Charles was a good friend whom I shall miss mightily...we shared many things about bee keeping, gardening, travel, history.  He was a real asset in this little UTBR neighborhood, using his knowledge and expertise in keeping our water supply flowing, and many other community support activities.Angie and I are saddened but we have been strenthened by his kindness and generous spirit.  He leaves a beautiful legacy.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.
